Gunyah Outdoors was started by Ockie & Lizelle Herman. Born in South Africa we always had an affinity with the great outdoors, travelling, fishing and touring.

Immigrating to Australia in 1998, we started importing Karrimor rucksacks, Gore-Tex Rainwear and outdoor footwear. A repair service was offered for rucksacks and soon after the foundation of the awning business was formed – the first awning.

Extensively tested on Fraser Island, Highland back country, Tasmania, Northern Queensland and the Outback the awning developed into the first Gunyah Outdoors awning.

It is now more than seven years since the first awning was manufactured and soon the business grew to become Australia’s leading awning manufacturer.

Made for Australian conditions, all our products are manufactured in Brisbane and well tested in our beautiful outdoors.

The key to the success of our awnings is that one person can set them up in less than a minute. We find this to be true with all the camping equipment we use, those items that are easy to use are always our favourites – after all you go camping to have a break! This is made possible by side support poles that are fitted to flexible hinges and swings out, away from the vehicle, unlike other awnings where you have to support the weight of the side supports when you set the awning up.The idea of the flexible hinge was taken from windsurfers where the mast is attached to the windsurfer with a flexible joint. We believe one day most vehicle awnings will be made this way – we are already copied by other manufacturers!

Our range of awnings are designed to suit the need of every tourer – use one awning, combine two with a link or add side curtains. The best part is it takes less than a minute to pack up!

For more space or wind protection simply slide on a side curtain (or three), clip on a side tent for overnight accommodation or link two awnings together for a family gathering. These options can add heaps more protection from chilly winds, pouring rain or simply add more covered area.

We love what we do and manufacture every awning as if it is for our own vehicles. After all we use them ourselves!
