- How often do you use your awnings?
- We use our awnings for every stop since it sets up in a minute it is hassle-free to use even for a coffee break.
A couple bought Gunyah awning for their 4x4 prior to doing a Simpson Desert trip and remarked that they spent $20 000 on getting their vehicle ready for the trip but value the awning the most since they used it on every stop!
Now you won't have to look for the elusive "next tree".
- Should we buy a side awning or a rear awning?
- Rear awnings are a must if you work out of the back door of your vehicle, offering all weather protection wether for tradespersons and travellers.
They are ideal for use with roller drawer systems.
Side awnings offer more cover and with the vehicle parked sideways into the wind, will help to get a sheltered and dry work/play area.
They are the first choice for larger families and general camping.
Some of our customers love both and some even fit awnings on three sides of the vehicle. Everyone have their own ideal camping or work setup of their vehicles.
You can also add side or rear awnings at a later stage and even link them up with corner fill-in pieces.
- Are the awnings waterproof?
- Absolutely. We use the finest quality canvas available. Every seam is double stitched for durability and strength.
We use 14,9 oz Australian Made canvas for the awning fabric and heavy duty Ripstop PVC for the zip-up bag.
Remember that you should get some angle on the awning when it rain to allow the water to run off.
We prefer to lift one leg up and drop the other and create a sideways angle on the awning so that we may still have head room underneath the awning.
Most of our customers buy our awnings for shade and are amazed by how many times it saved the day when it is raining.
The awnings offer enough shelter to prepare a meal or just to sit back with a glass of wine or a good book and wait for the rain the clear....
All canvas products should be stored dry. If you roll your awning up in the rain on your trip - just roll it out to dry the next day or when you get home.
The canvas do not absorb a lot of water and will dry in a very short period.
- What kind of roof rack do we need?
- ou can mount the awnings to virtually any roof rack as long as the distance from the end of the awning to your attachment point is less than 800 mm to prevent flexing and wear on long distance corrugated road use.
The awnings simply bolt onto most industrial style roof baskets. These normally have support plates that link the top bar of the luggage tray with the bottom bar - we simply drill 3 holes through the aluminium bar of the awning and bolt it to these plates.(ARB TJM ECB style racks)
Fitting awnings to roof racks (surf board style) we use two or three aluminium angle brackets supplied with the awning and simply bolt these onto the roof rack.
In most cases the awnings are fitted level with or underneath the roof racks as not to interfere with height clearance of the vehicle. (Rhino, Rola, Thule style racks)

- Are the awnings sturdy in windy conditions?
- We designed the awnings to be very stable in wind conditions and use for instance very heavy duty canvas and fully adjustable side supports to be able to tension the canvas that it does not flap in the wind. We even added velcro tabs to stop the canvas flapping against the side support poles.
If the wind direction is towards the vehicle from the awning's end it may deflect enough wind to lift the awning. To prevent this from happening we supply two guy ropes with each awning. On short stops simply tie it to a sidestep or wheel, for longer stops peg it out to provide an uncluttered walking space. When used on the beach be sure to use sand pegs or tie it back to the vehicle.
We designed a flexible hinge on the side support that allow the height of the legs to be fully adjustable. This provides a pivot point on the awning that prevents damage in most cases when the awnings are lifted by the wind.
In most cases we block the wind with the vehicle so that the wind blows over the car and them over the awning. We tested the awnings in 25 knots without tying it down and it did not move.

- Which model suits my vehicle?
- Since you get the most weather protection for your campsite with the vehicle parked sideways we try to fill the roof line of the vehicle with the awning.
In most cases 2,5 meters along the vehicle will suit Land Cruiser, Pajero, Patrol, Prado and simular size vehicles.
Our most popular model is the sidekick 2500 (2,5 meters x 2 meters) This offer enough cover for 5 - 6 people.
On shorter vehicles (Also Dual Cabs) you may consider to fit a Laid-back model. The Laid-back 2025 ( 2,0 meters x 2,5 meters wide) will give you the same coverage as the sidekick 2500. Dual cabs have independent suspension mounts on the cabin and tray and items should therefore not be fixed to both sections. We have designed a sliding bracket for dual cabs where longer awnings are fitted that require to racks on the canopy and a single bar fitted with a sliding bracket on the cabin to prevent flex in the awning but allows for forward and backwards movement
You can mount the awnings to virtually any roof rack as long as the distance from the end of the awning to your attachment point is less than
800 mm to prevent flexing and wear on long distance corrugated road use. This will limit the length of awning that you may want to fit.
We can also fit a support bar to the back of the awning to allow for more overhang if needed?
If this all sounds to technical just call us or email your vehicle & roof rack detail and we will recommend a suitable awning.
On most models we have options of 2 meter, 2,5 meter or 3 meter width.
Our 2 meter width options are the most popular since they normally offer enough space and are very easy to set up on your own.
The wider width awnings are ideal for larger families or show / commercial use but remember to tie them down in windy conditions.
- How do the extension curtains attach to my awning?
- There is a open aluminium rope track on the bar that the legs fold into. Simply set the awning up, slide the extension curtain into the rope track and peg it down.
For more space peg it out at an angle - we normally have enough space that we can move our camp table under the curtain.
For an extended area the curtains may be lifted with 3 poles and you can double your coverage!
We do manufacture walls to enclose the sides between the vehicle and the awning but need to measure the height of your fitted awning.
